What is Media?

Since humanity learned to communicate and entertain, media has impacted the way we think and function as a society.

Whether it's a 30 second Tik Tok, a favorite book, or even good ol' Shakespeare in the park, the media we create and share affects the way we view ourselves and the world around us. But you might be wondering, what, exactly, is media?

The Definition

In a literal sense, media is any form of mass communication. Books, films, TV series, plays, and content on apps like Instagram and Tik Tok are all forms of media. Media has allowed humanity to communicate thoughts and ideas all over the world and across any borders through a wide variety of methods. Because of this, media has become a foundation of how we form our own thoughts and opinions on the world. This is why the way we consume media can also be really harmful to developing individuals.

The Impact

When we consume media, we tend to internalize the ideas and opinions presented in that work. If this media is presenting toxic ideas, it can cause unnoticed damage to our mental health. But just as media can harm our mental health, it can boost it too.

When we see accurate representations of ourselves in media, especially popular media, we are emboldened to take up space in the world around us and walk through our lives with confidence. On that same note, seeing others in empowering roles also impacts the way we view society, allowing us to understand the value and importance of those who don't necessarily look or think the way we do.
